2009 Graphic Design Intern Position Description
Department: Advancement
Intern Supervisor: Director of Marketing and Media Relations
Length of Internship: 13 weeks beginning Monday, June 8,
2009.
Scope: The Graphic Design Intern will create, design and
implement print and digital media, updating the Museum's website,
designing and producing signage and collateral for Museum events
and programs, and other Museum communications.
Proposed Intern Schedule: 13 weeks beginning Monday, June
8, 2009; Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, required to be available
for weekend work during festivals and special events.
Intern Responsibilities
- Using PhotoShop and digital camera take photographs and work
with digital images posting to website and to Photo Archive
- Using InDesign create the following projects:
a. event promotional materials and signage
(Chesapeake Folk Festival, Member's Day, Boating Party, Boat Auction)
b. education department collateral
c. visitor services and museum store collateral
d. general museum signage
e. newspaper/magazine advertising
f. Summer 2009 issue of CBMM To the Point newsletter
g. brochure design and updates
- Using Dreamweaver complete website updates including promotional
and e-commerce tools as well as tweaking overall site design.
- Interface with printer in print production of graphic/communication
materials including acquiring printing bids/pricing, paper selection,
scheduling of print runs
Requirements:
- Education and experience in website design, graphic design,
and layout
- Comfortable working in Windows environment
- Expertise with Dreamweaver and Adobe products: In Design 2,
Illustrator, Photoshop
- Excellent computer graphics and technical skills
- Taking and working with digital photography
- Ability to work pro-actively and independently on multiple tasks
while maintaining quality and meeting deadlines
- Understanding of the role of individual communications and publications
as part of an overall communications strategy
- Appreciation of how communications and website complement and
advance a non-profit's mission

Notice of acceptance for intern positions will be made by Friday,
March 27, 2009.
Application Procedure:
The following additional items are required to complete your application.
Do not staple any of the required materials; they can be affixed
with a paper clip if necessary.
- A cover letter indicating the internship for which you are applying.
- A statement of no more than 500 words (two typewritten pages,
double-spaced), which explains how the Chesapeake Bay Maritime
Museum internship fits with your background and career goals.
Include the reasons for your choice of specific departments or
programs for an internship. Also describe what you hope to achieve
from the experience and what you believe you can contribute.
- Two letters of recommendation.
- Official copies of your most recent transcripts.
- Your resume.
- A recent writing sample.
Stipend: Full time interns are paid a stipend of $150 per
week. Interns are paid for holidays, but not for time lost due to
illness or personal leave. Co-ed, shared housing is provided to
interns on an as needed basis; a $50 refundable housing deposit
must be made at time of signed intern agreement.
