New Saturday for Kids Programs for Winter &
Spring at CBMM

ST. MICHAELS, MD—There’s no reason for children to be stuck in front of the TV this winter or spring, when they can come to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum for new Saturdays for Kids programs. Children from ages four through nine-years-old can enjoy two hours of hands-on activities, inspired by the Museum’s exhibitions, the Bay and the outdoors, or a historic skipjack or vessel.

The Saturdays for Kids programs at CBMM take place on select Saturdays from February 16 through April 12. In the mornings, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, the programs are tailored for children ages four through six-years old. The afternoon sessions, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., are for children ages seven through nine-years-old.

The Saturdays for Kids program is designed for children ages four through nine and offers two hours of fun-filled and challenging hands-on games, arts and crafts, and storytelling. Small classes, engaging projects, and a unique setting facilitate the learning process and offer kids a special place and opportunity for early engagement in building a love of the Chesapeake Bay and the region.

Each day will feature a different program inspired by one of our innovative displays, parts of our large campus, or a historic vessel. Classes will include instruction in art and history as well as science, and will incorporate painting, printmaking, drawing, mixed media and a wide variety of hands-on activities. Children participating in the Saturdays for Kids program will increase their understanding of the region, develop critical-thinking and analytical skills, and gain confidence in their abilities.

On February 16, the theme for the day is “Finding Crabs in Winter” and on February 23, children will learn about “A Mollusk Named Oyster.”

On March 1, kids will explore “Marshes and the Environment.” On March 8, they will learn about Bay lighthouses in “Winter Lights.” On March 15, kids will find out, “Is a Pirate’s Life for Me?” learning about pirates by hunting for treasure, and making a piece of sailor’s art to wear. On March 29, children will practice taking photos around the campus with a Polaroid camera and make a frame.

During the month of April, Saturdays for Kids focuses on Bay icons and the change of the seasons, with “ABC’s of the Chesapeake” on April 5, and “Spring is Coming,” on April 12.

A special discounted series pass is available, which includes all eight sessions, at $85 for CBMM members and $105 for non-members. Scholarships available for qualifying students.
