Saturdays for Kids
Selected Saturdays through March 2010
Ages 4 - 6, 10:00 to 12:00 o Ages 7 - 9, 1:00 to 3:00
The Saturdays for Kids program, designed for children ages four through nine, offers two hours of fun-filled and challenging hands-on games, arts and crafts, and storytelling on Saturdays during the winter. Small classes, engaging projects, and a unique setting facilitate the learning process and offer kids a special place and opportunity for early engagement in building a love of the Chesapeake Bay and the region.
Each day will feature a different program inspired by one of our innovative displays, parts of our large campus, or a historic vessel. Classes will include instruction in art and history as well as science and will incorporate painting, printmaking, drawing, mixed media and a wide variety of hands-on activities. Children participating in the Saturdays for Kids will increase their understanding of the region, develop critical-thinking and analytical skills, and gain confidence in their abilities.
Build a Bird – January 23
We’ll take a look at all their parts and then make our own out of some pretty surprising things!
Sandy Faces – January 30
Let’s pretend its summer and make masks with beach sand and bits of things that wash up on the shore.
Teeny Tiny Treasures – February 6th
Some of the coolest stuff is almost too small to see. We’ll make tiny boxes for the tiny treasures we find.
Can it! – February 20th
We’ll find the beauty in an oyster, then look at how they’ve been caught & sold over the past 100 years. The Museum has 250 different oyster can labels; let’s add more!
Puppet Masters – February 27th
We’ll make some Chesapeake stories come to life with our own creations.
Science Tools – March 6th
We’ll make some equipment that will make it easier & more fun to be good observers of nature.
