Old Point Restoration

Preparing an historic crab boat for a return to the water
Built in 1909 in Poquoson, Virginia, Old Point is one of the finest examples extant of a Chesapeake Bay crab dredger. From 1909-1956 she was owned by the Old Dominion Crab Company and worked the lower Bay as a crab dredge boat while hauling fish in the summer and oysters in the fall.

Old Point’s role at the Museum is educational in nature—for the shipwrights and apprentices working to restore her, for students who go out in her to learn about crab dredging, and for the visitors who learn about her on campus.

This seven-log bottom vessel is undergoing major restoration in the Museum’s Boat Yard. These efforts will bring Old Point back to the appearance she had when she was a working crab dredger in the 1950s.

Work on Old Point is being completed by the Museum’s Shipwright Apprentices as part of their hands-on experience in our Boat Yard. To date, the hull has been fully rebuilt and a new pilot house constructed.
