Boat Shop Renovation
Expanding a place
of work to a place of knowledge
The Boat Shop has been one of the most
essential facets of the Museum since the
shop was built in 1977. Its importance
in restoring and maintaining many historic
vessels is undeniable. Its role in the
visitor experience is equally important,
especially in view of the Museums
emphasis on programs to engage the visiting
public.
With increased public programming and
administrative responsibilities, the Boat
Shop needs to compartmentalize its activities
to maintain a safe environment for its
shipwrights, program participants, and
the visiting public. By enclosing the
first and second floors of the balcony
area facing St. Michaels Harbor, we create
necessary office space, which will provide
sufficient space to expand programs such
as Apprentice for a Day and Chesapeake
Peoplefurthering the transformation
of the Boat Yard from its focus solely
on vessel maintenance into a curriculum-driven
and program-based operation.
