Chesapeake Encounters

Chronicling
communities through a new exhibition
America began as a maritime enterprise.
For centuries, we have relied upon our
maritime resources for food, transportation,
jobs, and recreation. The Chesapeake Bays
coastal and inland waters have shaped
the course of our history and future.
As an orientation to both the Museum
and the region, the Bay History building
will feature a new permanent exhibition
on the history and culture of the tidewater
areafrom Native American oyster
harvesters, tobacco merchants, and free
and enslaved African American sailors,
to the watermen, farmers, recreational
boaters, and migrant workers of today.
Planning funds will bring scholars, curators,
and designers to our campus to help create
interactive components of the exhibit,
demonstrating how the Bays abundant
natural assets have supported distinctive
communities with rich maritime traditions.
