CBMM Hosts Third Annual Maritime Model Boat Expo

ST. MICHAELS, MD—On Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) will be host to the third annual Maritime Model Boat Expo. This event is presented by CBMM’s Model Guild and the North American Steamboat Modeler’s Association (NASMA). The show will feature “live” steamboat models, skipjacks with working sails, speedboats, tugs, and other radio-controlled miniatures.

Modelers will demonstrate the mobility of their highly-detailed and realistic models in a freshwater pond located near the Museum’s Steamboat Building. The Museum’s Model Sailing Club will also race five-foot-long skipjacks—replicas of Maryland’s official state boat—across the waters of nearby Fogg’s Cove, propelled by wind and under the remote guidance of their builders. Children will have the opportunity to build a simple model and sail it in a small pond separate from the main event. The expo will also feature static displays of boat models, and vendors will be on hand with models, kits, and refreshments for sale.

The Maritime Model Expo is open to the public May 20-21 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is included with the regular price of Museum admission, $10 for adults and $5 for children. CBMM members are admitted free.

For more information about the expo or to register, contact Model Guild President Bob Mason at 410-745-3266, bmason@bluecrab.org, or NASMA’s Tom Ray at 410-820-5036, yogojr@yahoo.com.

Sail with CBMM!

ST. MICHAELS, MD—What better way to explore the Bay than to learn to sail on it? The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is pleased to announce its Community Sailing Program for 2006—classes are filling quickly, so be sure to sign up soon!

The Museum’s Sailing Program provides a safe and fun environment for participants of all ages to gain the experience and confidence necessary to sail a small boat. In addition to the program’s popular Junior Sailing courses which begin on June 12, the Museum offers weekend classes for adults interested in taking up sailing on the Museum’s fleet of 15-foot day-sailors or on its 30-foot keel-boat. For the first time this year, the Museum is also offering a Teen Sailing Weekend from July 22-23 to provide a teen-oriented atmosphere for that age level to learn anew or improve upon their sailing skills.

This year’s program is directed by Jake Parris, who first learned to sail through the Museum’s program himself, and has also instructed for CBMM in the past. He will be joined by Ben Ford, who will oversee the Museum’s staff of instructors again this year.

To register for the Museum’s Sailing Program, please contact the Museum at 410-745-2916. Those who have specific questions about the program can contact Jake Parris at 410-745-2916, ext. 105 or via email at jparris@cbmm.org. A more detailed sailing program schedule can be found on the Museum’s website at http://www.cbmm.org/ed_sailing.html.

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is dedicated to providing affordable and quality sailing instruction for everyone. A limited number of full scholarships for these courses is available for those who qualify—please contact Jake Parris for more information.
