CBMM’s 2006 Free Family Concert Series Begins June 24

ST. MICHAELS, MD—The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is pleased to present its 2006 Family Concert Series, with three live performances scheduled from June through August.

June’s Family Concert is scheduled for Saturday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m. with local singer, acoustic guitarist, and song writer Chris Noyes. Noyes is one of the former members of the original Chesapeake Bay folk trio, Crab Alley. She has been playing Celtic music with various groups since the early 1980’s and has produced a solo album, Mirrorstones.

On Saturday, July 22 at 7:30 p.m., the acapella barbershop group Bay Country Chorus will perform at the Museum. This group, which represents the Easton Maryland Chapter of Barbershop Harmony, was founded in 1995 and is part of the largest all-male singing organization in the world.

The Notables will be featured at the Museum on Saturday, August 19 at 7:30 p.m. This group has performed at events all over Maryland and their show includes everything from Broadway to patriotic selections with some light comedy mixed in.

Admission to the Museum’s Summer Family Concerts is free, and each is performed on the Museum’s campus at the Tolchester Beach Bandstand. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring their picnic baskets, blankets, and chairs to enjoy the live music on the Museum’s waterfront. These concerts are held rain or shine; in the case of inclement weather, shelter is provided. For more information, contact the Museum at 410-745-2916.

Celebrate Crab Days at CBMM July 29-30

ST. MICHAELS, MD—It's that time of the year again—come celebrate the Maryland Blue Crab during Crab Days from 10am—4pm on Saturday, July 29 and Sunday, July 30 at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, where there will be plenty of food and festivities for all!

Those who love crabs will not be disappointed with the delicious steamed crabs, crab cakes, crab soup and more served up by Chesapeake Seafood Caterers. And for those who do not have a taste for seafood, there will be plenty of alternatives provided by Gourmet by the Bay, Tastee Freez, and the Maritime Museum Volunteer Association, including salads, sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, ice cream, and more.

The Museum's waterfront campus will be bustling with activities for visitors of all ages. Boat rides will be available aboard the H.M. Krentz and Mister Jim and live music will be performed by Blues DeVille on Saturday, Bittercreek on Sunday, and a DJ throughout the entire weekend. And you won’t want to miss the famous Maryland Crab Queens, who will be enthusiastically greeting all the Museum’s festival visitors on Saturday.

Crabbing demonstrations will include trotlining, chicken necking, crab pot making and crab picking. A special Kidstown area will provide activities specially developed for children, including paint critters, a touch tank, and a human crab pot. The Museum's Boat Yard staff will be on hand to skillfully demonstrate their wooden boat building techniques.
This year's Crab Days will also feature chef, TV show host of PBS' "Coastal Cooking," and author John Shields, who will provide live cooking demonstrations on Sunday.

Crab Days would not be complete without 'crab guru' Whitey Schmidt on hand to sign copies of his seafood cookbooks, including The Chesapeake Bay Crabbiest Cookbook. On Saturday, authors David Healey and Bryan Galecki will be available to sign copies of their books, 1812: Rediscovering Chesapeake Bay's Forgotten War, and Rum Runners, U-Boats, and Hurricanes: The Complete History of the Coat Guard Cutters Bedloe and Jackson, respectively. Author Lenny Rudow will be present on Sunday to sign copies of his new release, Off the Hook: Rudow's Recipes for Cooking Your Catch. Throughout the weekend, local pottery artisans Forrest and Martha Bogan will be selling their pots made from stoneware clay.

Tickets for Crab Days—which include admission to the Museum's 10 exhibit buildings—are $11 for adults, $10 for seniors over 62, and $6 for individuals between six and seventeen. Children ages 5 and under and Museum members are admitted free. Food, beverages, and boat rides are provided at an extra cost. This weekend festival will be held rain or shine.

July 1 is Big Band Night at CBMM

ST. MICHAELS, MD—Get out your picnic baskets, lawn chairs, and blankets for an evening of music under the stars! The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is pleased to host Big Band Night on Saturday, July 1 from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. with The Rhythm Doctors. This group of chemists and engineers from the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware discovered that they shared a common interest in performing swing music. Featuring a 17-member big band with a smooth and powerful sound, most of The Rhythm Doctor’s original members have earned Ph.D.’s, and so their name was born!

This concert will be performed live from the Museum’s Tolchester Beach Bandstand, rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, shelter will be provided. Admission for Big Band Night is $10 ($5 for Museum members), and children under 12 are free. 19th Annual Antique & Classic Boat Festival
Set for June

ST. MICHAELS, MD—The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is gearing up for the 19th annual Antique and Classic Boat Festival to be held on its campus at Navy Point from June 16-18. This event—the Mid-Atlantic’s largest gathering of classic mahogany speedboats—will feature more than 100 beautifully restored Chris-Crafts, Hackers, Gar Woods, and other unique wooden power boats. Food, demonstrations, activities for children, and several boat-related vendors will also be featured throughout the weekend.

The festival will offer a wide variety of vessels, ranging from a turn-of-the-century gaff rigger to high-speed raceboats of the 1970’s. Of special interest will be two 1930 Chris-Craft “Special Race Boats,” one of which is the red, white, and blue Miss Miami V raced by Baltimore’s own Ed Thompson (Lincoln-Mercury) and raceboat Hall of Famer.

This annual event is held by the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS), which has 38 chapters in the United States and Canada with more than 5,000 members and nearly 25,000 antique and classic boats registered.

This festival is an ACBS-judged event, with an awards picnic taking place on Sunday, the 18th. Having created specific classic boat judging standards for use in all their chapters, the Society hopes to motivate boat lovers to restore and maintain their vessels to a high level of quality and originality. Boats will be judged according to their workmanship, authenticity, and maintenance.

This weekend of festival entertainment will take place on Friday, June 16 from 11am-5pm; Saturday, June 17 from 10am-5pm; and Sunday, June 18 from 10am-2pm.

The cost of Antique & Classic Boat Festival tickets, which includes admission to the entire Maritime Museum, is $11 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $6 for individuals ages 6-17. Children 5 and under and Museum members are admitted free. Food is provided at an additional cost. For more information or to register, visit the ACBS Chesapeake Bay Chapter’s website at www.chesapeakebayacbs.net.
