CBMM Model Guild Offers Workshops

ST. MICHAELS, MD—The Model Guild of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is offering model boat building workshops for beginners in September and November in each of two basic boat building skills.

September’s workshop offers instruction in building a plank-on-frame model skiff, to replicate the Chesapeake Bay crabbing skiff. The 10-inch model is formed from two-toned flat stock over a frame similar to the way a full-sized skiff is constructed. This workshop is offered from Friday, September 22 through Sunday, September 24. The Friday class runs from 6:00 - 9:00 pm, and the Saturday and Sunday sessions run from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.

November’s workshop includes instruction on carving a solid half-hull model of The Pride of Baltimore II. This model is band-sawed from a two-tone wood block and carved to the rounded shape of the Pride’s hull. It is then mounted on a baseboard to form a wall display piece. This workshop will take place from Friday, November 3 through Sunday, November 5. Friday’s session is 6:00 - 9:00 pm, and the Saturday and Sunday sessions are held from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Both workshops are taught by CBMM Model Guild members, skilled craftsmen who enjoy sharing their knowledge and techniques with CBMM members, visitors, and students. The classes are held inside Mitchell House at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland.

Anyone 12 years or older is welcome to participate in these courses, and each workshop accommodates a maximum of six students. All tools and materials are supplied by the Model Guild, and some power tool usage is involved. Each workshop costs $80 for Museum members and $90 for non-members.

To register, please contact Helen Van Fleet at 410-745-2916, ext. 243 or via email at hvanfleet@cbmm.org. More information about the Model Guild can be found on the Museum’s website at www.cbmm.org/ed_cont_model.html.

CBMM’s 24th Annual Boat Auction
Scheduled for September 2

ST. MICHAELS, MD—If you’ve been awaiting the prime opportunity to buy an affordable boat, then the 24th Annual Boat Auction held at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is just for you. The animated Herb Andrew will be on board again this year as the event’s auctioneer, and on Saturday, September 2, he will be kicking off the live auction at 1:00 p.m.

New to the event this year is a flea market-style tag sale to be held from 10:00am to 1:00pm, where visitors will be able to purchase a variety of boating gear, including ground tackle, electrical equipment, hardware, rope or chain, ladders, fishing tackle, and motors.

Ranging in size and performance from sailing dinghies to cabin cruisers, more than 30 boats will be available for sale at the 1:00pm boat auction. Each vessel has been donated to the Museum for sale through its Boat Donation Program, which has been headed by Lad Mills for the past five years.

“Beyond taking an unused or unwanted boat off of people’s hands, and their receiving a nice tax deduction, boat donations to the Museum allow us to further our mission of preserving the heritage of the Chesapeake Bay,” says Mills. “Revenue generated by the sales of these donated boats goes into the operating funds that allow us to hold school programs, youth Lighthouse Overnight Programs, and to restore historic vessels. These donated boats make a difference to us!”

A selection of the boats to be auctioned can currently be viewed on the Museum’s website at www.cbmm.org/me_boat_auction.html. All boats are subject to sale prior to the auction. The vessels will also be available for inspection at the Museum several days prior to the auction. Fully updated listings of the boats up for auction can be obtained by contacting Lad Mills at 410-745-2916, ext. 112 or via email at lmills@cbmm.org.

The Boat Donation Program operates year-round, and donations can be accepted at any time by contacting Lad Mills at his contact information listed above—we welcome your used boats! This annual auction is the highlight of the Boat Donation Program.
