Led step-by-step by skilled modelers, participants will create a 10-inch wooden rowing skiff with lapped side planking and a flat bottom. Class size is limited, with pre-registration needed. The 10-inch model is formed over a frame in much the same manner as a real boat is constructed. Thin toothpicks are used along with fast-drying glue to fasten the models together. Models are made of one dark and one light wood, which are alternated in the design to make a handsome, two-toned appearance.
CBMM’s Model Guild welcomes anyone 12 years of age or older to take these classes, and encourages new members of all skill levels to participate in the Guild, use its facilities, and trade model building experience with museum visitors. A special rate for a parent-child team can accommodate younger children.

Select Saturdays, through February 25
Pre-registration is required, call Helen Van Fleet at 410-745-4941 to reserve a spot. Limited space available. $12 for members, $15 for non-members. A special six-session pass is available for $68 for members and $80 for non-members. Scholarships are available for qualifying students. Visa, Mastercard, and Discover accepted

NEW EXHIBIT:
Push and Pull: Life on Chesapeake Tugboats
April 21, 2012 through 2014
Open daily in the Steamboat Gallery
Food, fuel, and all the stuff of modern life – almost nothing moves on the Chesapeake Bay without tugboats. The men and women who work on tugs docking ships and moving barges do difficult, sometimes dangerous work with rules and rhythms all its own. Explore their world in Push and Pull: Life on Chesapeake Tugboats through the stories, images, and objects of the Bay’s tugboats and the words of the people who work them.
CAPTION: Tugs perform essential work along our waterways from towing barges with fuel or other vital materials and salvage work to assisting larger ships in docking. Here a pair of tugs maneuvers the passenger liner United States into a slip at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company piers for a refit in the spring of 1954. Photograph by A. Please consider joining or sponsoring this inaugural event, which will raise funds for the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, ELF’s homeport on the Chesapeake. Interested yacht owners or sponsors should contact Rick Carrion at the CYRG. Vikings on the Chesapeake
Friday, June 22 - Monday, June 25, 2012
Free for members or with paid admission
On June 22, the Viking ship Norseman will be landing at the Museum for a three-day visit to give visitors a real-life look at a Viking ship and the type of people who sailed them more than 1,000 years ago. Norseman is a 40 foot half-scale replica of the famous Gokstad ship that represents one of the many types of sailing vessels the Vikings designed and built. The Norseman’s crew will be in authentic
Viking costumes and establish a small encampment, complete with iron and woodworking tools, and period music.
The ship is sailing under the banner of the Leif Ericson Society International, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting truth and understanding of the Viking explorer who was the first European to set foot upon the North American continent. The ship is based in Wilmington, DE at the Kalmar Nyckel Shipyard, and will be trailered to the Museum campus.
Maryland is not known for a large Scandinavian-American population, but Delaware and New Jersey were the primary destinations for thousands of emigrants from Sweden and Norway in the 19th century. And just one look at some of the boats on display at the museum will offer convincing proof that many Viking boat designs hold up even today.
The Viking visit is made possible by Merrilyn & John I. F. Knud-Hansen.

Van Lennep Auditorium, Museum Campus

Chesapeake farms today are often hundreds of acres of the “big three”- corn, soybeans, and wheat, but some small farms are thinking outside the box. Representatives from Crow Farm in Kent County, Maryland, will be speaking about their approach towards “staying original” in local agriculture, and how they have built their business on embracing the Bay’s small, family-oriented farming past while innovating with natural, grass-fed beef and pork, farm-to-table events, and a new vineyard and winery.
General Tour Training
February 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23

This training is for volunteers interested in becoming docents. It provides the basics of content, interpretive skills, and critical thinking needed to guide a group on a general tour of the Museum. No experience in education or teaching is necessary, although an interest in public speaking is critical. All sessions are mandatory for course completion.
