Boat Building
Apprentice
for a Day—
Two New Boats for Winter!
—Dan Sutherland, Boat Yard Program Manager
Learn traditional boat building under the direction of a CBMM shipwright. You can be part of the whole 17-week process or just sign up for those aspects of building a boat that you want to learn. Must be 16 or older unless accompanied by an adult.
This winter and spring the Apprentice for a Day program will build a Rushton 14’ double-ended rowing boat. This vessel is an excellent rowing boat, weighing roughly 75 pounds. Ideal for portaging or car topping, this ultra light lap strake construction is very durable and typical of Rushton’s designs through the late 1890’s. In this class we will go from lofting, planking, ribbing, and fitting out over 17 weekends. At the completion of the class we will have a finished boat with custom oars ready to be launched and rowed as the final class.
We will also be offering a “Women’s Only” class, duringwhich we will build a Sutherland paddle boat, of my grandfather’s design. Over the two weekends we will use this boat as an introduction to wood working. We will acquaint you to basic power and non-power tools to mill all the parts to the boat. The second weekend we will assemble the boat and finish the hull to the primer stage. This boat is ideal for younger children to learn to play on the water.
